ABOUT TRAIN STATIONS IN AUSTRIA

OBB (the Austrian Federal Railways) is a national railway system that connects entire Austria and even beyond. OBB proudly operates hundreds of routes, trains, and stations, providing high-class service to all travelers. If you're planning on using OBB services during your journey, here you can find all useful and important information about stations serviced by OBB. Learn about stations' locations, working hours, needful amenities, luggage and other facilities of the stations. OBB's network spans the entire country, from the alpine valleys of Tyrol and Vorarlberg in the west to the flat plains of Burgenland in the east.
With over 1,100 stations and stops across approximately 4,900 km of track, OBB carries more than 470 million passengers per year, making it one of the most heavily used rail networks in Europe relative to the country's population. International connections extend to Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Hungary, Czech Republic, and Slovenia, turning Austria into a central hub for European rail travel.

The crown jewel of the OBB network is Wien Hauptbahnhof (Vienna Central Station), opened in 2015 and one of the most modern railway stations in Central Europe. Designed as a fully through-running station — replacing the old terminus layout — it handles over 1,000 trains and around 145,000 passengers every day. The station is directly connected to the Vienna U-Bahn metro, trams, and city buses, and features more than 90 shops, restaurants, and service outlets across its three levels. International high-speed trains to Budapest, Prague, Warsaw, and night trains to cities across Europe all depart from Wien Hauptbahnhof.
Beyond Vienna, major OBB hubs include Salzburg Hauptbahnhof, a key stop on the corridor between Vienna and Munich with direct ICE and Railjet services, and Innsbruck Hauptbahnhof, the gateway to the Tyrolean Alps and an important junction for routes into Italy and Switzerland. Both stations have been extensively modernised in recent years and offer the full range of passenger facilities expected at a major European rail hub.
Did you know?
OBB operates the Nightjet network — one of the largest overnight train services in Europe. Nightjet trains connect Vienna, Innsbruck, and Salzburg with destinations including Amsterdam, Brussels, Rome, Paris, and Hamburg, offering a sustainable and comfortable alternative to short-haul flying.
OBB stations are designed with passenger comfort and accessibility in mind. Most major stations feature step-free access to all platforms via lifts and ramps, tactile guidance systems for visually impaired travellers, dedicated assistance services for passengers with reduced mobility, and real-time departure boards throughout the concourse. Many stations also offer staffed customer service desks, self-service ticket machines, and luggage storage lockers available around the clock.
Whether you are commuting within a city, exploring Austria's scenic regions, or embarking on a long-distance journey across Europe, OBB's network of well-equipped stations makes every part of your trip straightforward and comfortable. Tickets can be purchased online via the OBB website or app, at station ticket offices, or at self-service machines — with significant savings available for advance bookings and holders of the OBB Vorteilscard discount card.
